Alex & Sam, 31st May 2025

During May, Alex & Sam hosted their wedding reception at Westonbirt House and they have recently been in touch to express their thanks and we are so pleased they did. Here’s what they had to say:

‘We’re finally coming back to reality post wedding and we wanted to write to express our heartfelt thanks to David and the team at Westonbirt House.  Phenomenal throughout, from the planning of the wedding to execution on the day, the whole team were amazing. Many of our guests say they were amazed by the beauty of Westonbirt House and Gardens. The perfect wedding venue. Truly, our most heartfelt thanks! While these memories will stay with us for many years to come, we wanted to share them with you why we feel a wedding at Westonbirt House is exceptional.

Amazing attention to detail

David, Rachel and the entire team made Sam and I feel so cared for and calm throughout the whole today. From the champagne greeting, attentive topping up of water glasses and personal plates of canapes, to checking in with us during the wedding breakfast. Everything detail was noted and that was just so special

Warm hospitality

Grandad John has told everyone he knows that the whole team knew his name and kept him topped up with refreshments – he felt like a minor celebrity! You made him feel special and I will cherish those memories.

Exceptional catering

The canapes and wedding breakfast were fantastic and the dinner service ran so smoothly. Many of the guests complimented the food and the Dutch guests were particularly fond of the Scotch eggs! My mum commented on how beautifully presented everything was. Please pass on our heartfelt thanks to the Catering Manager and chefs.

Calm and relaxed

Despite running behind, calmly and effortlessly David and Rachel ensured the whole day ran smoothly. Nobody noticed and everything felt completely relaxed.

Professionalism

The kindness and professionalism of all your team created such a special and perfect atmosphere for us David. You were truly instrumental in our wedding day being the best day of our lives. Special mentions also to Rachel, Poppy and James.

Considered touches

Holford was set up perfectly with the sofas, water, mirrors and the card was just such a thoughtful and considered touch. It was the perfect space to change and take a breather. Honestly, the attention to detail was exceptional.

A perfectly wonderful day at Westonbirt House

We could continue but suffice to say, everything David and the team did made our wedding day perfectly wonderful. I hope the highlights we have are helpful to other couples considering a wedding in such as special place.

History of Westonbirt House

A spectacular neo-Elizabethan mansion house designed by architect Lewis Vulliamy, Westonbirt House is ‘one of the finest examples of Victorian architecture and gardens in the Cotswolds’ according to Country Life Magazine. And we have to agree!

Nestled in 210 acres of rolling parklands as short ride from Tetbury, with its elegant interiors and notable gardens position Westonbirt House high amongst the hidden architectural gems of the Cotswolds.

Built by Robert Holford between 1863 – 1885, who was intricately involved in its design, Westonbirt House was inspired by Wollaton Hall in Nottinghamshire, a late Elizabethan mansion designed by architect Robert Smythson in the 1580s.

Holford, a connoisseur, art collector and one of the richest men in Victorian England, also laid out the gardens. His interest in trees extends beyond the gardens and grounds at Westonbirt House, to nearby Westonbirt Arboretum which was once part of the Westonbirt Estate.

Inspired by the picturesque aesthetic, the terraces, lake, grotto and gardens combine in a conscious attempt to create foregrounds and backgrounds that highlight the more formal Italian Garden. With its Jacobean Revival gateways, Pavillion and glass house, the Italian Garden is a popular space for outdoor events, weddings and private gatherings.

Following the death of Robert Holford’s son George, who took over the estate in 1892, Westonbirt House and its grounds became a school in 1927. During term time, the children of Westonbirt School fill The Library, Dining Room and Great Hall with their conversation and laughter. The rooms are alive with the sound of youthful endeavour and industry.

And when not in residence, the ornate gilded ceiling, historic silk-covered walls and spectacular picture windows that overlook the lawns are the perfect backdrop for all manner of life celebrations or work gatherings.
